Where would Aotearoa be without its Not for Profit sector?
The answer paints a dire picture for everyone charitable organisations support in this country. That’s why we’ve continued to invest in this research for over two decades. In 2026 there are more people in need and fewer resources to go around which is why resilience emerged as the key theme in this year’s survey of the sector. The findings suggest the NFPs most likely to thrive over the next decade won’t simply be those with the biggest budgets. They will be organisations that build resilience financially, strategically and operationally, while still remaining firmly focussed on their purpose.
We hope this report not only provides insights about how to tackle some of the challenges NFPs face today, but also reinforces our deep conviction the work they do is critical to Aotearoa.

Grant Thornton New Zealand’s 2026 Not for Profit sector report is based on the insights provided by 205 sector leaders and decision makers from across the country. This year’s research attracted nearly 18% more responses than our 2022 study, reflecting a sector that wants its experiences, challenges and opportunities to be heard and understood.
