Barry joined Grant Thornton New Zealand in April 2000, having immigrated from South Africa two years earlier.

His first position in New Zealand was as financial manager of a successful family owned business within the hospitality industry.

Prior to moving to New Zealand Barry was Head Office Accountant of a company quoted on the stock exchanges in South Africa and London. He also held the position of Company Secretary of the Aluminum Division of this Group. He also acted as Trustee of the group's independent pension fund and Principal Officer.

Barry has a wide range of experience in a number of industry sectors serviced by the Grant Thornton Assurance team, including:

  • Not for profit
  • Motor vehicle
  • Health and education
  • Service
  • Manufacturing
  • Securities Act 1978 compliance

Through his varied background, Barry has developed expertise in many areas of accounting, including:

  • Assurance services/external auditing
  • Due diligence reviews
  • Internal controls and systems reviews
  • Special investigations
  • Preparation of financial statements

Outside interests

Barry has served on numerous committees related to his children’s and personal interests including Parent Teachers Associations, Special Music Performance Association, a society that promotes the musical development of selected students from primary school through to university level in Christchurch, Chamber Music New Zealand – Christchurch Committee, and also a Society that currently promotes the redevelopment of waterways in the greater Christchurch area.  In the past he coached amateur gymnastics and was also a provincial gymnastics judge. Barry has a strong interest in music and the arts as well as tramping and gardening.
